St.Mary's Church had been built in the 13th century and had served both families for many generations. The parish registers Salehurst, Sussex, states.
"Saul SPICE bachelor of this parish married Sarah MARCHANT spinster of this parish on 31 March 1812 at Salehurst by banns."
Their marks were recorded and witnesses were John WHITE and John HEATHFIELD.
