Notes - Memories of Benjamin Free as told to us by Murray McGough now aged in his nineties, who with his parents was a neighbour of Benjamin in the Mallee.
Des & Fay Menzel visited Murray on 12th September 2013 he remembered Benjamin Free (known as old Ben Free ) to be short & plump in stature & to Murray then a youngster thought Ben to be quite old and knowledgeable who kept pretty much to himself. According to Murray ( who passed away two weeks after our visit) Ben & Maud Free arrived in the Mallee about 1919 with a daughter Mavis aged 12 years according to the Pallarang school records( have not confirmed if Ben & Maud were married) both Maud and Mavis loved to sing and were very keen to perform on the stage in the local concerts. Ben was a wheeler & dealer in sheep buying & selling through the local Stock Agent in the district. As told to us by Murray Ben owned a horse operated chaff cutter and cut chaff for the local farmers and that Mavis married a local farmer in the Mallee. After her husband's early death she then married a man in Adelaide and about that time Maud left Ben and moved away from the Mallee having saved enough money of her own to leave. Ben continued to live in the Mallee employing several housekeepers until............
In June 2014 we continued our research of Benjamin visiting Des's cousin in Murrayville Victoria who told us Mavis had married Douglas Stewart a local farmer in the district who had died quite young and was buried in the Cowangie cemetery. We visited the Cowangie cemetery and found where he was buried, headstone reads Douglas William Stewart died 2 Mar. 1942 aged 41 years beloved husband of Mavis and father of Dorothy.
We then travelled to Watchem, Victoria and was told Benjamin farmed close to his mother Eliza's property at Watchem. ( To date this is all we have been able to find out about Benjamin Free, hope this is of some help.)
