The 'Donald Express' reported, on 21 December 1888, that James and Samuel Free, both of whom were described as single farmers, applied to take over two forfeited blocks of land located at Corack East. Neither application was recommeded by the licence board . The report indicted that James already held a 161 acre block about one mile from the land requested. Samuel, too, had a block of land (187 acres) which he had purchased from his mother. The report noted that he had never selected land, but had applied previously. He was then living with his father. The board similarly recommended against a later application made on 9 August 1889. The 1903 Electoral Roll for the Division of Wimmera shows Samuel , a farmer, and Fanny Free at 'Cannie' at Lalbert. The photo shows the family of Samuel and Frances Johanna (Fanny) Free. Standing in the back row are Samuel, William Hickmott (Frances' husband), Frances (holding her first child Grace)
