Notes - Tracing Emma back to try to find how she got to Victoria. Her death certificate says her parents Charles Daniel and Sarah Sutherland were from "Hoburn" England. There is a village Hoburn in England but after research points to it being morelikly that it was really Holborn in London. Pallet's index to marriages in the London area has a Charles Daniel Sutherland and Sarah Bull marrying at St Andrew's Holborn in 1827.
The 1841 England census has Sarah, Emma, (Mary) Ann, and Jane at the Hackney Union Workhouse. This is in the same area of London as Holborn; it is part of Middlesex and St Andrews is on the border of Middlesex and London. I can find no reference to Charles Daniel in the 1841 census at all. I think it probable that he died before that and his wife and daughters were then forced to enter the workhouse. On 10th October 1852 Sarah Sutherland (44) and her daughters Emma (19), Jane (15) and Annie (14) set sail on the Ann(e) Milne for Portland Victoria arriving there early in January 1853.
