Henry Tissott
Notes - Henry Tissott (spelled Tissom in the baptismal register of Sts Peter and Paul RC church in Wolverhampton, Staffs. His mother was listed as Hannah. The priest admitted that the spelling was wrong at Henry's Pleadings for clemency. He was originally sentenced to death but this was commuted to 7 years transportation at VDL. He was something of a bad boy because he got another 6 years tacked on to his sentence. When he married Emma Sutherland in 1853 at Portland, Vic, the age is off by about 5 years. He could easily have subtracted 5 from his age to make him seem a little younger. I still have no proof that the Henry Tissett transported to VDL in 1833 on the Isabella is the same Henry Tissott who married in Portland in 1853.
Henry was transported at 8 or 9 to Van Diemen's Land for stealing a cow. Henry was born in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, on 27th March 1819; he stole a cow and was tried and sentenced to death in 1831 at the Stafford Assizes. The sentence was commuted to 7 years transportation and he was transported to VDL on the Isabella in 1832 when he was 13. I have a transcript from the National Archives at Kew with this data. The transcript fortunately included a sworn statement by his priest as to his age.
He ended up spending 14 years in the system for bad behavior and absconding. I haven't yet discovered how Henry got to Portland and I may never find out. As now, there were few records kept for people moving colony to colony. He could have crewed on a fishing boat for all I know and there were a lot of people moving around at that time hunting for gold. I looked at the Eureka Stockade signature list but couldn't find him there.
The fact that Henry named his first son Joseph further evidence that this is the Henry that was transported. The transcript of the Stafford Assizes includes two pleadings for clemency from his father Joseph and the records from Tasmania show that he had tattoos on each arm one of which was an anchor and the initials J.T.
