  • Notes
    • I asked granny once (Emma Jane) why she never remarried as she was only 30 when George Walter died. Her answer was that "there was no other man on earth as wonderful as he and was therefore irreplaceable". Mum remembers him as a most kindly man who would dress in his best each Sunday - although never went to church. He never drank or smoked, did very little entertaining, played the 'jews harp' and worked very hard. Although Emma Jane was only 16 yrs old when he married her, he apparently "allowed her to grow up" naturally minding the children and insisting that she go off to the dances and have some fun. She loved him till the end and told me that she "saw" him twice in her dreams, both times sitting on the end of her bed smiling....which she swears was no dream?? She said that he was her saviour and rescued her from a terrible family life.
Well, he certainly was a *fit* man. 19 kids!!! - the last being born when he was 64 years of age.
      Regards
      Gail Pascoe

My mother tells me that the old antique clock that sat on my grandmothers fire surround was "won by my grandfather in a foot race
from York to Perth Town Hall" She says that he "had to run around the Hall twice when he got there"....

Now, my uncle (who is younger) seems to think that it wasn't a foot race, but a horse/cart race, but also believes it was from York to Perth Town Hall!

I am trying to discover at what time of his life did my grandfather supposedly win this race, if in fact there ever was such a race! Obviously, I want to read newspaper reports of the day in the hope that there was some news about the event. But, I need to know an approximate year to start looking through the "Eastern Districts Chronicle"! OK, here's the info I have to help with the dating...

My grandfather was born in 1860 at York (George Walter TREW). He was married in 1882 and lived in York, Guildford and Perth before
settling in Sawyers Valley c1889. So...from this information, I presume the race would have been possible for him from the age of about 15 yrs (1875) to say 25 yrs (1885).

I wondered why such an event would have been run... maybe the opening of the York Town Hall? No, that was after the "turn of the century"! Maybe the opening of the Perth Town Hall? No, too early! BUT...apparently the *clock* went in quite a few years after the Perth
Town Hall was opened! Perhaps this could have resulted in a race to win a *clock*! I think this was in the right time-frame period c1877?
I have checked the general index at Battye for "footraces", "Town Hall events", etc. but nothing.

Another clue I have, is that apparently my TREW ancestor was also quite a running athlete at "White City" which I finally discovered was an old term used for the sports ground opposite "White City" on the esplanade in Perth. Athletic events were held regularly at the grounds. This information came to me by way of a very old gentleman, who *may* have been a little confused...but perhaps not?

The only other 'brain-wave' I've had is to date the clock!! This clock now lives in Albany, and I have not seen it for many years. I had the
owner look for any marks/stickers or anything which would help date the clock, but nothing!! I have spoken to a 'clock dealer' at an antique
fair, and he said the 'black clocks' were made for many years, and would probably not help me in narrowing it down to a couple of years!

So there you go......any clues as to *how* I can confirm that this race actually happened?
      Gail Pascoe - Mandurah

Apparently when he was married to Sarah Ann Anderson , he was kicked by a horse , when she heard of the news , she went into labour and died (bled to death ).
      Andrea Seeber - C/- Bruce Aberdeen - 2004

George Walter TREW was quite a famous axeman in his younger years. (1880/90s) Royal show log chopper followed by becoming a judge at the events.
