  • Notes
    • From The North Midland Times newspaper, Friday 15 January 1937:

"Another fatality occurred at Dongara last week-end when a young man, Sydney George (Jim) Brandis (21), employed by Mr. Bert Watson, of Strawberry, was fatally injured in a motor smash. The accident occurred about one mile from Dongara on Saturday night when Laurie Selwood, of Mingenew, and Brandis were riding a motor cycle from Dongara to the beach. The motor cyclists were some distance behind a motor truck, travelling in the same direction, and it appears that the truck, which was driven by Gordon Tamblyn, had just topped a rise when the lights failed. When Selwood, who was driving the motor cycle, topped the rise he was confronted with the truck standing in the middle of the road, he swerved sharply to the left to avoid the verhicle, but the right hand handle-bar caught the back of the vehicle and Brandis was thrown heavily against the truck. He sustained multiplex injuries including a shattered hip, broken rubs, internal injuries and head injuries. The injured man was conveyed to the Geraldton Hospital where he succumbed at 6 a.m. next morning. The remained were interred in the Geraldton cemetery at 3 p.m. on Monday. Selway was fortunate in escaping with an injured right hand and shock."
