Notes - Sent to South Africa and employed by the British Government for 8 years as a botonist for the Colony. Arrived WA 12th Oct. 1829 per 'Caroline'.
Botanist for Cpt. James Stirling and original land holder of the Olive Farm in Guildford est. 1829. Began with plantings of Olive Trees, soon followed by grape vines. Olive Farm is WA's longest operating vineyard, if not the oldest. Realising the soil and climate of WA was similar to South Aftica Thomas pioneered grape growing in the Swan Valley . Once grape production began Thomas used it to barter for goods from shop keepers. The original cellar was dug out by Thomas for his wines.
