  • Notes
    • Robert McGlinn joined the R.A.N. in 1910, he was not sent to a war zone. Feeling left out of it, he jumped ship in Melbourne and went to New Zealand where he enlisted in the New Zealand Army under the name of McKenzie. He went to Gallipoli where he served with the transport corp ferrying supplies and appears to have escaped any injuries. From there he was sent to France where he met his father, James McGlinn and his brothers Stephen and Henry. They convinced him to surrender and he was given a pardon - however he had
to continue to serve in the N.Z. army. He met his wife Christina in England at the war's end, married her and returned to New Zealand with the intention of coming back to his home in West. Aust. his wife however was expecting their first child, Nellie and was very ill so the return home was delayed and finally abandoned as they made a life for themselves in New Zealand. He had a bad cough all his adult life which he blamed on being gassed four or five times in France during the first World War. However he was also a heavy smoker, smoking pipe tobacco in hand rolled cigarettes and this may have had something to do with the cough. He developed emphysema which eventually led to his death. He underwent an operation for a ruptured stomach ulcer and did not recover from the anaesthetic due to the state of his lungs.
