  • Notes
    • transported to Western Australia in 1853 from County Cavan, Ireland. He had ten children and the youngest of them was Selina Mabel
      Died at Old Men's Home

      (Notes compiled by Jim McGlinn b. 24 04 1932)
      >From National Archives of Ireland: System of Transportation. Record 307. Thomas McGlinn aged 20 years was convicted at Cavan, County Cavan on 3rd of March 1851 of 'Larceny and former convictions' and sentenced to transportation for 10 years to the colony of Western Australia. The prison transport on which he was deported was the Pheobe Dunbar and the date of transportation was June 1853. Document References: TR 11, P15. According to the records I ( Jim McGlinn b. 24.04.1932) have been able to find the 'Pheobe Dunbar' arrived in Fremantle on 30th August 1853 with Irish prisoners from Montjoy Prison, Dublin. This accords with a report that the 'Pheobe Dunbar' had sailed from Kingston. Kingston was the name of the harbour in Dublin under British rule. It was changed when the Irish Republic was established. At the Public Records Office, Kew, in London I found a michrofiche detailing the ships that had been used to transport convicts
which said that the Pheobe Dunbar had loaded Irish convicts from hulks in Dublin harbour. Thomas would have spent up to two years imprisoned on a hulk before transportation. Additional information from the Prison Register at Fremantle seen on microfiche at Brisbane State Library: Thomas Mcglinn was convicted by Baron Penniefather.

In the WESTERN AUSTRALIAN ALMANACK AND DIRECTORY which was printed between the years 1842 - 1889, the name Thomas MCGLYNN (It would seem that the misspelling of the name McGlynn rather than McGlinn was very common.) was included as a boot and shoemaker of YORK for the years,1873 - 1876, 1879 - 1881 and 1884 - 1889. (In York I confirmed that he had been listed for the
      complete period 1873 - 1889)

From the Convict Records available from Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints, family records department:
On microfilm reels no 207 - 210 convict description lists for Western Australia. Thomas McGlinn was convict number 2368. At the time of his arrival in Fremantle he was 22 years of age, 5ft 7ins in height with dark brown hair, dark grey eyes, a round, freckled face with a sallow complexion and of slight appearance. He had a cut on the top of the second finger of his left hand. His trade was shoemaker and he was single.

      TICKET OF LEAVE
Employed by Stephen Brown, who had arrived at Fremantle on April 5th, 1854 aboard the "Sea Park" Brown was a shoemaker, harness maker and saddler. Between 1854-1879, Brown employed 22 T/L men including 5 shoemakers. Brown was known locally as Dr. Brown.
