Richard Spanswick
Notes - Richard & Elizabeth were twins. convicted of sheep stealing in 1850 at the Marlborough Assizes and sentenced to ten years transportation to Oz. His wife did not join him in Oz, and died in 1867 at Easton Royal, leaving Richard free to marry again, to Mary Fisher. I believe he had nine children by her from 1867 to 1886. Richard was brought for trial on 15 Oct 1850 at the Marlborough Quarter Sessions accused on two charges. the first of stealing four lambs at Brimslade resulted in Not Guilty. The second charge of stealing one ram, two ewes and six lambs at Easton resulted as Guilty, sentenced to ten years transportation. His occupation at the time was Shepherd. Haven't any details of the ship or date he went to Oz on. Can it be traced any easier at your end ??? He stayed in Oz and Jael didn't join him for some reason or other, Jael dying in 1867 left Richard free to marry again to Mary Fisher, also in 1867. They had nine children:-
1.William Fisher Spanswick(1867-1943)
2.James (1868-1898)
3.Sarah (1871-1959) (m1900) to William Pollard.
4.Emily(1873-1925) who had an Illegitimate son Fred (1892-1943)
Emily then married in 1895 to Robert Woodcock
5.Samuel(1876-1879)
6.George (1878-1952)
7.Helen (Ellen) (1881-1929)(m1900) to William Buchanan
8.Eliza (1884-1943) (m ) to George William Rowlinson
9.Mary (1886- )
Emily's son Fred married Harriet Rebecca Haworth(1907-1995) in 1928. They had three children :-
Audrey Lillian (1928- ) married Colin Stuart Heatley
Fred (1934- )(m1953) to Philomena Maud Forward
Kathleen Joy(1940- ) married to Geoff Ogden
I believe Fred and Philomena had four children:-
Mark Frederick who married Debbie Faye Guelfi
Paul who married Diane Louise Halstead
Bruce who married Jodie lee Daye
Ann Marie who married Barry William Saunders.
So there must be a few Spanswicks still in Oz !!!
The Richard and Mary Fisher Spanswick descendants came from Graham Little in Oz, who is descended from Emily(1873-1925)
I can't find his email address at the moment I'm afraid but will let you have it as soon as it turns up.
