- Surnames tend to originate from occupation (Turner), size (Little), place (Hill) or descent (Wilson). The name 'Warr' is no exception. In the past, there was no army provided by the state to fight battles/wars. Each Lord of the Manor, however small, would provide a fighting force of his own, to be called on by the Monarch or for him to follow his own belief or allegiance(see the Wars of the Roses, the Jacobite rebellions, etc.). He would keep a small fighting force (mercenaries) all the time and then conscript his workers should the occasion arise for major conflict, a tradition carried on into the First World War. This small fighting force would be given the name of the Baron, Earl, etc for whom they fought. The name Warr is no exception. Each mercenary would be given the surname 'Warr' to identify them. The original 'De Warr' does indeed mean warrior and the first Baron gave this name to his private soldiers- they were 'Warr's men'.
