Looking at the information that Eric Hansen's book ( and others ) have for the ancestors of Richard Fairweather leads me to think that , if I am right and the ancestor jumped off a boat, then the "jumping off " port may well have been Lowestoft as there are so many early records of early , direct , ancestors ( c 1450 - 1550 ) in the area ALL around, within walking distance of Lowestoft.

The surname " Fairweather " is unknown before 1200 , shortly after it is found in the Newcastle, UK area ( possible cattle thieves changing their names ?) . My guess is that a Fairweather worked on a coal boat in the coal trade from Northeast England to London and the East Coast ports , got to Ipswich and hooked up with a local girl , hence all the Suffolk connections .

Latest discovery is that there are Fairweathers in the Arbroath / Brechin areas of Scotland and that may well be where the family originated . A coal trade connection is still a distinct possibility .
