  • Notes
    • The 1851 census for Haslingfield shows Mary Ann (7) living at 13 Back Lane in Haslingfield with her parents and siblings.

The 1861 and 1871 censuses have her living with her parents at Barton Road Haslingfield. By 1871 she was married, her married name being Claydo

By the 1881 census Mary (37) had re-married and was now Mary Hardman. Her husband was Isaac Hardman (30) a goods porter who had been born in Barrington in Cambridgeshire. The family was living at 100 Leicester Street Little Bolton in Lancashire. They had with them Mary’s daughter by her first marriage, Alice Claydon (14 and born at Haslingfield) and three of their own children: Ann (3), Samuel (2) and Louisa (3m). Ann and Samuel were born at Haslingfield whereas Louisa was born at Bolton, Lancs.

I could find no record of the family in the 1891 or 1901 censuses.

The 1901 Canadian Census also shows my paternal great-grandparents James Hogg and Mary (Jane Blair Armstrong) Hogg and my grandfather David Hogg and Louisa (Hardman) Hogg. James, David and Dave’s brother Matthew changed their name to Hogue shortly after this census. David was a Hogue in 1898 when he married Louisa and a Hogg in the 1901 census. Their daughter Annnetta was a Hogg when she was born in February 1899. Their daughter Mary Louisa born in May 1901 was a Hogue.. The Hogg’s and Hardman’s were farmers. The farms were in Purple Valley, Ontario according to my family history which was recorded in the family bible given to Louisa Hardman by her parents on her marriage to David Hogue. David and Louisa were married on 19 July 1898 in Lions Head, Ontario at Christ’s Episcopal Church and Reverend Mc Leold was the pastor. The maid of honor was Eleanor Hardman and the best man was Casper Holler. The Holler family farm is also shown on the1901 census, but Casper is living elsewhere. I believe Isaac either gave or rented a farm to David Hogg
The farms in order- James Hogg - William Morrison - David Hogg - Isaac Hardman - Andrew Holler

In 1911, Isaac Hardman and David Hogue were cement contractors. I believe they got into the business because of Samuel Barnard Spragge (Ann Hardman’s husband) who was a longtime cement finisher. Sam’s family has a hill , Spragge’s Hill, named after his family ( I believe grandfather) outside of or part of Wiarton, Ontartio My aunt Mary Louise Hogue-Davis remembers her fcather leaving home in a buckboard with a cement mixer trailing behind.

Mary Ann died in Toronto on 25 November 1913. Her funeral service was at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Wiarton, Ontario , November 28th and she was buried at Colpoys cemetery which is on a hill above Colpoys Bay , Ontario. The death notice indicates age 70, which would make her birth year 1843 and this agrees with Graeme. Holy Trinity Episcopal Church was The Hogue church. David was Irish Methodist but he attended with Louisa when he was in town.
