    Notes:

farmer. "PELL Bridge" Brand Highway near Dongara.
The "Sophia" brought 250 immigrants to Western Australia, 4 of whom were engaged by Lefroy to work for him, namely John and Ester Pell, a shepherd and a boy. Their rates of hire were 16 pound. 15 pound and 10 pound per annum respectively.
Esther was already pregnant, but they set out in Lefroy's bullock cart for Walebing. It had been arranged for Mrs Doust to come from "Bebano" to attend Mrs Pell at her confinement, but when the time came John Pell was away working so Lefroy sent a native boy to Clinch's for help but when Mrs Doust arrived she found a healthy baby boy awaiting her, he had been born just after midnight on 15th November 1850. George as he was named, was the first white baby to be born in the Victoria Plains.

The Pells remained in Lefroy's employ until after the birth of their second child. About this time Gerald de Courcy Lefroy made over "Walebing" to his brother Anthony, who installed John Joyce, a Toodyay workman, as his station manager. The Pells then worked for "Squire" Phillips of "Culham" Toodyay, and when he took up land in the Irwin district in late 1880's, Pell was employed as Phillip's shepherd. The ruins of their first home are close to Cadji Station east of Mullewa before returning to Dongara where John Pell sr. took up land north of the town, naming the property Wimpole, after his birthplace in England.

John C Pell was the son of William Pell and Frances B: 1831 in England. He married Esther Bright their bans where read in Wimpole 28th October 1849. He and Esther emigrated to Western Australia on the "SOPHIA" They where both 21 years old when arrived with John brother George he was 19.
He was a farmer at PELL'S Bridge on the Brand Highway near Dongara.

Notes on the Arrival of SOPHIA

Arrived in Fremantle with a crew of 33 and the Captain was John Claborn he received 25 pound for the
journey. The weather was hot and calm for most of the 3 month voyage. The younger passengers where able to cool off in a sail on deck filled with water.
Supplies where inadequate- no fresh water was taken on after they set sail and oranges proved to be a novelty with the passengers.
The ship was 537 ton teak and yellow metal and was built in Calcutta India in 1819. Sophia arrived in Western Australia on July 27th 1850.
Settlers traveling to the Swan River in 1850 were required to pay a rate up to twice that required from those contemplating passage to America and Canada, All who where assisted emigrants on SOPHIA contributed towards their fare.

When SOPHIA arrived in Fremantle the where no Wharf's and immigrants could not remain on board for the interview with prospective employers.

The acute accommodation shortage led to the leasing of several buildings in Perth and Fremantle. Some of immigrants were placed at the disused steam driven flourmill below Mt Eliz on site where the Swan Brewery was later built. While in residing at the Immigration Depot, adults daily rations were:-
    1lb bread,1lb meat, ½ lb potatoes, 2 oz sugar, ¼ lb Tea.

    • AKA: Criddle
    • Occupation: Servant/Farmer
    • Immigration: Arr.: 12 Oct 1829, Western Australia, Australia; Per "Caroline" as indentured servant to Alfred Hawes Stone

    Notes:

    "The Hentys" by Marnie
Bassett spells out the tale in fine detail ...

The Henty family chartered the CAROLINE to send out their advance party to the Swan River Colony and had to arrive before the end of 1829 with money and goods in tow (investments in the new colony) to qualify for offers of grants of free land ... part of the goods, apart from sheep & provisions, was servants.

Of the 65 passengers on board (cabin and steerage) many were servants, not only to the Hentys but to the other gentlemen on board ...Camfield, Talbot, Trimmer, Everard and Alfred Stone 28, solicitor and "a good shot, whose mustachoes were black".

Camfield's servants were Frederick & Frances Friend and child Mary Ann, and William Smith and wife and son William.

The Henty servants were George Hills and his wife, son and daughter, while other labourers and servants were listed as Mr & Mrs Chipper, Mr & Mrs Gee and 5 children, Mrs & Mrs Rewell and daughter, Mr & Mrs Bushby and 2 sons, Mr & Mrs Sandford and 4 sons and 6 single men by the names of Price,
Patterson, Dyer, Barnden, Haybittle and Goble.

No other names jump off the pages at me but Erickson says William Criddle arrived on the Caroline and was A.H. Stone's servant and Phoebe was his youngest child, born in 1870.

The HENTY servants were nearly all old employees of the family in Sussex UK and "signed on to serve Thomas Henty, gentleman, or his agents, as dutiful servants for five years in return for a free passage, twenty pounds a year, fuel, and board.

The Henty's had a rough time of it in the colony and moved on to Tasmania and settled in Launceston where their father and the rest of the migration caught up with them. One son, Charles, set up a shipping business and took goods around to Fremantle, as well as setting up business in South Australia
and their Victorian claim to fame of settling the Portland area.

It states in a book that the name may have been taken from Crit Hall in the small town of eneden. Willam Criddle was born 1804 in Kent (not sure where)his surname was spelt Crittal, and his hometown was tunbridge wells, he came to Western Australia as indentured servant to a solicitor Mr Alfred Hawes Stone, William was released from his indenture in 1830 to make his own way in the colony. After working for a few years in the Perth area, WIlliam went to Toodyay, or Newcastle as it was then known, he met future wife, Elizabeth Thomas, who was born in Bristol U k. They were married at "DEEPDALE" the home of Elizabeth in 1840,he was 36 years and she was 18 years they had fourteen(14) children.
William was a stonemason and a builder. The Perth gasette of 1842 mentions that the Police Barracksat Toodyay was built by Willaim Criddle he eventually moved the Greenough flats on his own land and engaged in farming, there is much more to this story but cannot write it all on this message.I am not sure where you live, I shall check your email address later, but if you are interested and you don't know already Greenough is about twenty five kilometres south of Geraldton, it is now a tourist area and has a renovated hamlet, and there are various old buildings and ruins in the area (we go there often researching) many of these buildings at Greenough and Dongara were built by William. He died at Greenough 12 may 1875 (i shall ask my wife where he is buried) his wife Elizabeth died in Dongara in 1909 and is buried in Dongara cemetery. One last point the first child of William and Elizabeth was Anne Criddle she married a John Patience (they were my wife Pamela's g/grandparents)John Patience was number two (2) convict on arrival, from England, that is another story.

Dr. Milligan, being sworn - During my absence from home, on a visit to a friend, the previous evening I received an intimation by my servant that some soap had been stolen from the Kitchen; as the prisoner Gee was suspected, I went in the direction he was described to have taken, and overtook him in company with his wife. The soap was lying on the ground, rolled up in her apron. I asked Gee how he could have been guilty of robbing me, after employing him so long; he immediately acknowledged that he had taken the soap from my house, but appeared anxious to ----- notice of what he had done. Mr Francis Milligan confirmed the previous evidence. The prisoner being called upon for his defence, said "It is no use to deny the charge, I did steal the soap - but my wife is as innocent as a child unborn of the whole matter."
